Scenery

The island has a surprising contrast of landscapes, from the volcanic arid west, with its famous petrified forest, to the pine and chestnut forests of the area around Agiassos.

The popular destination of Skala Kalloni sites on a plain at the head of the Gulf of Kalloni, and is a fertile area full of agriculture, rivers, scrub and a large salt pan.

However, the island is dominated by olive groves, which appear to be found in every corner of the island.
